It’s the holiday season again and what a year this has been! The staff at Owl Furniture hopes that you and your family are healthy and safe and we wish you a bright new 2021.
Geoff just completed the last commission of the year and put it on the deck to photograph along with our staff photo. Madison is on the left, then Allan, Polly and Geoff and Belinda. For this table he used a new joint that mirrors the opening between the two laminated sections of the Stonington Continuous Arm Chairs that will accompany this table. Here is a time lapse video of Geoff glueing the table with Lee Dorsey’s version of “Ride Your Pony” (thus the name of the table) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmS6VBoYChw . This table is going cross country from Maine, all the way to California. It’s nice to know that the table and chairs get to do some traveling while we all wait for healthier travel times ahead. The “Pony Table” was designed for a small intimate seating area in a newly renovated kitchen and the customers also wanted the comfort of the Stonington Continuous Arm Chairs to relax in their new location.
Geoff is inspired by the location of each commissioned piece. He likes to see photos of the surrounding area to get a feel for the customers’ taste in design elements. He then develops ideas based on wood type, element suggestions of the customer and space considerations. Designs begin to form on paper and a dialog takes place making sure all the needs and interests of the customer are met. As with this table he often comes up with a new technique or element that he hasn’t used before that is inspired by a new commission, a sign of a true craftsman that knows his craft!
